Java Applets for Teaching and Learning Mathematics

To run the programs, you need the Java Plug-in. If you try to look at the programs and you don't already have the plug-in, you should be prompted to get the plug-in, and then you will be taken to where you can download it for free. This should all happen pretty automatically--just click "Yes" or "Next" at each step of the way. It only takes a few minutes (unless you have a slow connection).

  • An applet and tutorial for Iterative Methods.

  • An applet for Calculus (I wrote and used this applet for an experimental Calculus class I taught a few years ago while a post-doc at UCLA--I'm in the process of trying to get an NSF grant to fund my improvement and further development of this applet so that it could be used in any Calculus I course).

  • A few applets that were homework assignments from Java classes I taught in the past.

Check out the "Conference sessions, etc." link from my Research page for information about work I've been doing to disseminate and coordinate work that others are doing in creating and using applets for teaching and learning mathematics.

I am slated to serve (pending final approval by the appropriate committees) as a Vice Chair for WEB SIGMAA, an MAA small activity group interested in the effective use of the WWW in teaching mathematics, which is currently being formed.

As time permits, I occasionally review mathematics applets submitted to MERLOT.
